Opening of Zaventem

On 30 May, the Ministry of Transport, Edward Anseele formally hands over the new airport complex to the Regie der Luchtwegen/Régie des Voies Aériennes. On 5 July, the official opening ceremony takes place, just a couple of months after the opening of the Brussels World Expo.

Departure hall: the Skyhall

The wonderful departure hall, designed by the trio of architects, M. Brunfaut, G. Bontinck and J. Moutschen, representing (typically for Belgium) the three regions=> Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia.

The first Sky Shop

During the World Expo of 1958, the airport experiences high volumes of traffic. Aldo Vastapane opens his very first tax-free shop at Brussels Airport, selling mainly perfumes, alcohol and tobacco.

Prince Albert’s trip to Rome

Prince Albert travelling to Rome to attend Pope John XXIII’s crowning ceremony. During this trip Prince Albert met his future wife Paola Ruffo di Calabria.

Sikorsky S-58’ helicopters are used for the transfer of World Exhibition visitors to Zaventem.

The Red Devils Belgian national soccer team heading to Brazil to play a friendly match against a Brazilian team featuring Pelé and Garrincha.

First Jumbo Jet

First Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet from Pan Am landing in Zaventem in 1970.

Opening of the Satellite

Built to give the airport more space to receive the growing number of wide-bodied aircraft (Jumbo Jets), this pier extension increased capacity from 6 to 8 million passengers a year.

Presidential State Visit

Mrs. Nixon and Henry Kissinger accompanied by Queen Fabiola. The two escorted US President Richard Nixon on his state visit to Belgium.

Opening of cargo

The very first 25 square meters reserved for cargo freight have grown into a cargo complex of over 100 hectares today, handling the transportation of 536 000 tons a year.

The Pope in Belgium

Pope Jean Paul II in conversation with ex-Belgian Prime Minister Wilfried Martens and Monseigneur De Smet during his visit to Belgium.

An ecstatic welcome for the Red Devils

On 30 June, the Belgian Red Devils get an ecstatic welcome at the airport on their return from a great World Cup in Mexico, where they reached the semi-final.

Warm welcome for Eurovision winner Sandra Kim

Both the youngest winner of Eurovision and the first and only Belgian winner to date, Sandra Kim won with her song ‘J’aime la vie’.

Cycling legend Eddy Merckx leaving for Oslo

The departure of the Belgian cycling team with Eddy Merckx, to take part in the World Championship in Oslo.

Opening new terminal

Connected to the 1958 terminal and pier B (for non-Schengen traffic), the new complex is inaugurated by King Albert II on 12 December.

Sabena bankrupcy

On 7 November, following 9/11 and its economic consequences, the Belgian airline Sabena is declared bankrupt.

Creation of SN Brussels Airlines

Founded on 15 February 2002, the new Belgian airline, now called « Brussels Airlines », flies passengers to 124 destinations today.

On 16 May, Pier A (Shengen passengers) is officially opened by Prince Philip.

55 chocolate statues of Brussels' famous Manneken Pis are sent to Iceland, Brazil, Israel, Australia and India for the twentieth anniversary of Belgian chocolate company Belcolade.

On the morning of 22 March, three coordinated suicide bombings occur in Belgium=> two at Brussels Airport, and one at Maalbeek metro station. Thirty-two civilians and three perpetrators are killed, and more than 300 people are injured.
